On the southern edge of the new town, the big, grassy Parque El Ejido is fairly empty on weekdays, but fills up at weekends with whole extended families and their lunches - although with the scores of footballing youths that also frequent the park, it can’t make for very relaxing picnicking. Most tourists come for the Saturday and Sunday handicrafts market, which stretches around the semicircular path at the northern end of the park. It has a good selection of stuff, with vendors from all over the country coming to sell their wares. Prices are slightly higher here than in the larger markets such as Otavalo, but lower than in the shops and other markets in Quito during the week.
